Aerial Bundled Cable (ABC) Medium Voltage 12.7/22(24) kV is a fully insulated overhead cable system comprising single or multiple phase conductors bundled together. Each conductor is individually insulated with XLPE, screened with semiconductive layers, and optionally armored or sheathed. These cables are designed for use in medium voltage overhead distribution systems.
Urban, suburban, and rural overhead distribution networks
Ideal for areas with dense vegetation, limited right-of-way, or difficult terrain
Replaces bare conductor systems, improving safety and reliability
Minimizes faults due to tree contact, wind movement, or wildlife
Suitable for use in industrial zones, coastal areas, and high pollution environments
Standard | Title |
---|---|
IEC 60502-2 | Power cables with extruded insulation and their accessories for rated voltages from 6 kV up to 30 kV |
IEC 60228 | Conductors of insulated cables |
IEC 60840 | Power cables with extruded insulation and their accessories for rated voltages above 30 kV up to 150 kV (reference only) |
IEC 60060, 60229, 60332 | High-voltage testing, test on outer sheath, flame tests |
A typical 12.7/22 (24) kV ABC MV cable consists of the following components:
Component | Description |
---|---|
Conductor | Stranded aluminum or copper, Class 2 as per IEC 60228 |
Conductor Screen | Extruded semiconductive compound, fully bonded |
Insulation | XLPE (Cross-linked Polyethylene) with 90°C continuous rating |
Insulation Screen | Extruded semiconductive layer, strippable |
Metallic Screen | Helically wound copper wires or tapes (individual or collectively screened) |
Outer Sheath (optional) | UV- and weather-resistant PE or HDPE if additional mechanical protection is needed |
Bundling | 3-phase conductors (with or without neutral and streetlight core) |
Messenger (if used) | Bare or insulated neutral support conductor, optionally load-bearing |
Parameter | Specification |
---|---|
Rated Voltage (U/U0) | 12.7/22 kV (24 kV max) |
Conductor Temperature | 90°C (normal), 130°C (emergency), 250°C (short-circuit) |
Short Circuit Duration | 1 second |
Test Voltage | 50 kV (for 12.7/22 kV rating) |
Minimum Bending Radius | ≥ 15 × cable diameter (typical) |
UV Resistance | Required (outer sheath if present) |
Flame Retardance | IEC 60332-1 or 60332-3 (if required) |
Water Penetration Protection | Optional (with swellable tapes or powders) |
Configuration | Application |
---|---|
3x Single-core twisted | Standard ABC configuration |
3x + Neutral (quad) | With neutral support conductor |
3x + Neutral + Streetlight Core | Public lighting integration |
Self-supporting (messengered) | Messenger acts as mechanical support |
Fully bundled system | All conductors insulated and twisted together |
Insulated system reduces electrical faults and improves safety
Withstands mechanical stress, UV exposure, and chemical attacks
No crossarms needed, reducing pole height
Lower maintenance costs compared to bare conductors
Minimizes power outages due to external contact (trees, wildlife)
