XHHW-2 is a cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulated building wire designed for both dry and wet locations. The "-2" suffix indicates suitability for 90°C operation in wet conditions, making it superior to standard XHHW.
Key Characteristics:
Voltage Rating: 600V (common), up to 2kV (special constructions)
Temperature Rating:
90°C (194°F) in both wet and dry locations
105°C short-term overload capability
Conductor Material: Copper (bare or tinned) or Aluminum (AA-8000 series)
Insulation: XLPE (Cross-Linked Polyethylene)
Jacket (if present): PVC, LSZH, or Thermoset
Flame Resistance: Meets UL 44, IEEE 1202 flame tests
Water/Oil Resistance: Excellent (RHW-2 rating for wet locations)
Primary Uses:
Commercial & industrial power distribution
Service entrance conductors
Feeder and branch circuits (NEC Article 310)
Wet/damp locations (conduit, underground, cable trays)
High-temperature environments (HVAC, industrial machinery)
Direct burial (if marked for such use)
Advantages Over THHN/THWN-2:
Higher temperature rating (90°C wet vs. 75°C for THWN-2)
Better chemical/abrasion resistance (XLPE vs. PVC)
Longer lifespan in harsh conditions
Lower smoke/toxicity (if LSZH jacketed)
3.1 Conductor
Material:
Copper (Class B solid or Class C stranded)
Aluminum (for larger gauges, per AA-8000 standards)
Stranding:
Solid: 14 AWG - 1 AWG
Stranded: 1/0 AWG and larger (flexible for pulling)
3.2 Insulation (XLPE)
Thickness:
600V: 0.76mm (14 AWG) to 2.41mm (500 kcmil)
2kV: 2.79mm minimum
Color Coding:
Black, Red, Blue (ungrounded)
White, Gray (neutral)
Green (ground)
3.3 Optional Jacket
PVC: General-purpose mechanical protection
LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen): For plenum/tight spaces
Sunlight-Resistant: For outdoor exposed runs
3.4 Standard Ampacity (NEC Table 310.16)
