12.7/22(24) kV Medium Voltage Aerial Bundled Cables (ABC) are insulated, overhead power cables designed for use in aerial distribution networks. These cables are bundled together and fully insulated, allowing safe and compact overhead installation without the need for large right-of-ways or bare conductor clearances.
This system provides increased safety, improved reliability, and reduced tree-trimming maintenance compared to bare overhead lines.
Overhead medium voltage distribution in urban, suburban, and rural areas
Suitable for areas with vegetation, narrow streets, or dense construction
Ideal for difficult terrain (hillsides, forested areas, coastal regions)
Used for reticulation, service drops, and rural electrification
Replacement for bare overhead lines to improve public safety
Standard | Description |

AS/NZS 3599.1 | Specification for aerial bundled cables for working voltages up to and including 33 kV |
AS/NZS 1125 | Conductors in insulated cables |
AS/NZS 3808 | Insulating and sheathing materials |
AS/NZS 5000.1/2 | Power cables - polymeric insulated |
IEC 60502-2 (Ref.) | (International equivalent for MV extruded cables) |
IEC 60228 | Conductors of insulated cables |
A typical 12.7/22 (24) kV ABC MV cable consists of the following components:
Component | Description |
---|---|
Conductor | Stranded circular aluminum (Class 2), sometimes compressed |
Conductor Screen | Extruded semi-conductive screen for electric field control |
Insulation | XLPE (Cross-linked polyethylene) rated for 90°C normal operation |
Insulation Screen | Extruded semi-conductive screen, strippable for termination |
Metallic Screen | Helically wound wires (usually aluminum or copper) for fault current path |
Outer Sheath (Optional) | Some designs may include HDPE or UV-resistant PE outer sheath |
Bundling | Conductors are twisted together (bundled) with or without a messenger wire |
Messenger/Support Wire | May include a bare neutral messenger or insulated neutral conductor |
Single core or three-core designs
May include an integrated neutral and streetlight core
Designed for self-supporting or neutral-supported installations
Improved safety: Fully insulated-reduces risk of electrocution
Compact and lightweight
Less tree trimming
Reduced line faults (especially during storms or high winds)
Quick installation and relocation
Minimal maintenance
A typical cable consists of:
Aluminum conductor (central)
Inner semi-con screen
XLPE insulation
Outer semi-con screen
Concentric neutral wire layer
Outer UV-resistant sheath (optional)
With integrated fiber optic core for telemetry or smart grid use
Water-blocking tapes (for humid climates)
Outer HDPE sheath for severe weather environments
