6.35/11(12) kV Aerial Bundled Cable (ABC MV) is a fully insulated, medium voltage overhead cable system where one or more XLPE-insulated phase conductors are bundled together, often with a neutral/earth conductor. The insulation is suitable for outdoor use, resistant to UV, moisture, and tracking.
This system is designed for overhead power distribution without exposed live parts, providing enhanced electrical safety, mechanical robustness, and reliability, especially in adverse environmental conditions.
Overhead medium-voltage distribution networks (urban, rural, industrial)
Suitable for areas prone to vegetation interference, such as forests or coastal regions
Used in congested urban areas, where safety and aesthetic considerations are priorities
Ideal for installations in difficult terrain, such as hilly or mountainous regions
Reduces outages caused by animals, tree branches, and climatic conditions
Standard | Title |

A typical ABC MV 6.35/11(12) kV cable consists of the following layers:
Component | Details |
---|---|
Conductor | Stranded aluminum, Class 2 to AS/NZS 1125 |
Conductor Screen | Extruded semiconductive layer |
Insulation | XLPE (Cross-Linked Polyethylene) rated 90°C continuous, UV stabilized |
Insulation Screen | Extruded semiconductive layer, strippable |
Metallic Screen | Helically applied copper wires or tape |
Separator (optional) | Layer to prevent adhesion between screen and insulation |
Sheath (optional) | UV-resistant HDPE/PE or semiconductive PE, for mechanical protection |
Bundling | Conductors twisted into a compact cable bundle |
Messenger (optional) | Bare or insulated neutral support conductor, self-supporting systems |
Property | Specification |
---|---|
Rated Voltage | 6.35/11 kV (Phase-to-ground/Phase-to-phase), max 12 kV |
Maximum Operating Temp. | 90°C (continuous), 130°C (emergency), 250°C (short circuit) |
AC Withstand Voltage | 24 kV (5 min test) |
Minimum Bending Radius | 12 × cable diameter (typical) |
UV Resistance | Yes (mandatory for sheath or insulation) |
Flame Retardance | Optional - tested to AS/NZS 1660.5 or IEC 60332 |
Water Blocking | Optional (via water-swellable tapes or powders) |
Configuration | Usage |
---|---|
3 × Phase Only | Standard three-phase system |
3 × Phase + Neutral | With bare or insulated messenger |
3 × Phase + Neutral + Streetlight | Includes public lighting functionality |
Self-Supporting | Neutral acts as load-bearing |
Fully insulated system prevents live contact and reduces faults
Lower maintenance and installation costs than traditional overhead lines
High resistance to weather, mechanical damage, and pollution
Environmentally friendly with reduced need for vegetation clearance
Better performance in storm-prone or bushfire-prone areas
